Meisje met hoepel ontstond doordat Ronald Zuurmond een geschilderde afbeelding uitsneed en op een nieuw, wit canvas plaatste. Het meisje staat daardoor in een bijna gewichtloze leegte waarin de hoepel een eigen ruimte vormt. Het werk heeft een bijzondere spanning: speelbaarheid en kinderlijke lichtheid botsen zachtjes met het donkere gelaat van de figuur.

Tactus IV, het andere werk van Zuurmonds hand naast Meisje met hoepel, werd gemaakt tijdens de covid-periode. De wereld hield afstand, maar Zuurmond zocht juist naar aanraking. Hij drukte letterlijk zijn met olieverf bedekte hand op het doek. Alsof hij door het linnen heen een hand wil reiken: een klein, intiem gebaar van nabijheid in een tijd van afstand.

Ronald Zuurmond created Girl with Hoop by cutting out a painted figure and pasting this onto a new white canvas. As a result, the girl is standing in an almost weightless void in which the hoop creates its own space. There is a remarkable tension in this work: its playful and childlike light-heartedness juxtaposes gently with the figure’s dark face.

Tactus IV, the other work by Zuurmond adjacent to Girl with Hoop, was made during the covid pandemic. While the world kept its distance, Zuurmond was looking for contact. The oil painting is literally an impression of the artist’s palm. As if he were reaching out to another hand behind the canvas: a small intimate gesture of closeness in a time of separation.
