Guido Geelen neemt een unieke positie in binnen de Nederlandse beeldhouwkunst. Al sinds de jaren negentig hanteert hij een onconventionele benadering van materialen als keramiek, brons, ijzer, aluminium, glas en textiel.

Deze koppelt Geelen aan een iconografie waarin zowel eigentijdse als klassieke beeldmotieven herkenbaar zijn. In veel van zijn werken behoudt de kunstenaar sporen van het maakproces, zoals in Boeket Eucharis. Dit ‘boeket’ is gegoten volgens de eeuwenoude cire-perdue, ofwel verloren-wasmethode. Van een boeket bloemen maakte hij eerst een wasmodel, dat hij omhulde met een vuurvaste mal. In de oven smolt de was, waarna Geelen de ontstane holtes in brons goot. De gietkanalen liet hij bewust zichtbaar, waardoor ze onderdeel uitmaken van de sculptuur.

Annelies and Bob van Eerd collection Guido Geelen occupies a unique position in Dutch sculpture. He began developing his unconventional approach to materials such as ceramics, bronze, iron, aluminium, glass and textile in the 1990s. Geelen combines these with an iconography that refers to contemporary and traditional motifs. The artist often leaves traces of the creative process in his work, as in his Eucharist Bouquet. He made this posy using the age-old cire-perdue or lost-wax process. After shaping a wax model of a floral bouquet, he wrapped this in fireproof material. When heated, the wax melted and Geelen then filled the remaining empty mould with bronze. He deliberately left the ducts in place, retaining these as part of the sculpture.
